Sport at Avening

We are very proud of our sporting tradition at Avening Primary School. Our Subject Leader, Mr Mark Wilkinson, is a PE specialist, who plays a key role in promoting sport throughout the school – both in terms of curriculum and extra-curricular provision.

As well as PE activities (including swimming lessons for children from Years 2, 3 and 4, as well as older non/early swimmers), we have an annual residential for Years 5 and 6, with alternate Water Sports and Outdoor Pursuits; an annual Sports Day; and lots of extra-curricular sports clubs, including Tag Rugby, Cross-Country, Football, Netball and Cricket.

Despite our small size, the school regularly performs well in inter-school tournaments. We take part in many tournaments and events in a range of sporting activities organised for the SWR Cluster and Cotswold Schools. Many children from our school qualify for Area Sports each year. We are proud of our sporting triumphs. We are also keen to encourage children to participate in events in a sporting fashion, showing respect for others at all times; our children are regularly complimented for their good behaviour at local events and competitions.

In our Sports Awards Ceremony in July 2024, every child in the school received a medal and certificate for involvement in at least one sporting event with other schools during the year.

We have been awarded the School Games Gold Kite Mark as recognition of our commitment to sport - a great achievement, which reflects the many sporting opportunities the children at Avening Primary School enjoy!
